The benchmark bq2057 series of advanced lithium ion (Li ion) and lithium polymer (Li ion) linear charge management integrated circuits are designed for cost sensitive and compact portable electronic products. They combine high-precision current and voltage regulation, battery regulation, temperature monitoring, charge termination, charge state indication and autocomp charge rate compensation in only one 8-pin IC. MSOP, tssop and SOIC package options are suitable for a wide range of terminal applications.
Bq2057 uses an external thermistor to continuously measure the battery temperature. For safety reasons, bq2057 will inhibit charging until the battery temperature is within a user-defined threshold. Then, bq2057 charges the battery in three stages: regulation, constant current and constant voltage. If the battery voltage is below the low voltage threshold V (minutes), bq2057 will use low current precharge to adjust the battery.
The regulated charge rate is about 10% of the regulated current. Regulating the current also reduces the heat dissipation of the external communication element in the initial stage of the charge. After adjustment, bq2057 applies a constant current to the battery. An external inductive resistor sets the current. The inductive resistance can be on the high side or low side of the battery without additional components. The constant current phase continues until the battery reaches the charging regulation voltage.
